Puf[nstuf] The Magic Dragon

2006-06-29 - 10:00 a.m.

Got some bad news yesterday. I found out that Lennie Weinrib has passed.

He was an actor and voice guy. He was in a few eps of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and many many MANY others. I knew him best as a trivia question.

Long long ago, I had a roommate named Bill who knew more about TV and animation than anyone I'd known at the time. When I had a trivia question, I would preface it with: "Excuse me, He Who Knows Everything About Everything About Which I Know Nothing..."

Most of the time he had the answer. But I stumped him once. I asked: "Who did the voice of H. R. Pufnstuf?" Bill had no idea. He said he'd find out. He never did. The apartment household broke up several months later, and I haven't seen him in years. Turns out, Pufnstuf's voice was done by Lennie Weinrib. He also did the voices of Seymour the Spider and Ludicrous Lion, and was one of the head writers for the show.

Mark Evanier has a wonderful write-up about Lennie, with far more and better info. Please click here and check it out. There's some video links that need to load, so give it time.

And here there's a video link to a PSA that ABC did back in the 70's. Weinrib did the voice for this character as well.

So now two of Pufnstuf's Holy Trinity are gone - Weinrib and Jack Wild. Billie Hayes is the only one left.

I need to curl up with the DVD set for awhile.

Re the bug situation:

I chatted with Brin and put forth the suggestion that they may be baby spiders. Brin said, "You know, you may be right...it's that time of year."

I also spoke with the downstairs neighbors, and they are getting them, too. So the landlord has been notified. Probably more spraying will be done. Which means I'll have to close the windows and roast.

Well, better that than becoming bug food. I don't plan on THAT happening for a few decades, at least.

===

That's all for now. Lots to do today.

Be seeing you.

Actually, I'm dipped. Having seen the bugs on that windowsill myself, I have no early idea what those things were. :-( I'll see you at Cero's in about two hours, Old Buddy.
