And So It Goes

2007-04-12 - 11:31 a.m.

Brin heads home today. We're going to take it easy - order in food, watch the Kill Bill movies, and relax. We don't have to leave the apartment until 7:30 to have her at the airport by 8.

She comes back next month. By then Bob's foot will be healed and the studio work can be finished. Both of them are looking forward to that.

Speaking of Bob, he's doing some taping for episode #5 tonight...one week after having a toe amputated.

The man is nothing if not driven.

Charges against the Duke lacrosse team have been dropped. The charges that were leveled against them have been proven false...in fact, the prosecutor for the case (who was up for re-election) is accused of withholding evidence that would have exonerated the players months ago.

Now, let's compare that to the Imus flap. We have two college teams: Rutgers women's basketball team that is largely black, and a Duke men's lacrosse team that is almost (save for one player) exclusively white. Now, a white man - who is known for insulting everyone regardless of race, creed, religion, whatever - insulted the Rutgers team with a mean-spirited quip. The results: no season cancelled, no coach fired...no arrests. Nobody on the basketball team had to spend large amounts of money on defense attorney's fees. They were insulted. The were the targets of a stupid, racially charged remark...but that's pretty much it.

Now, look at the Duke team. They were accused of a crime. Attorneys were hired, coaches fired, seasons cancelled...reputations damaged. DNA swabs were taken, charges were filed. The district attorney was out there saying that a rape most definitely had occurred. Now we find that they were completely innocent - falsely accused. In the meantime the white man who made the extremely stupid remark about the Rutgers basketball team is being attacked and vilified. The black woman who made the false charges of rape against the lacrosse team will most likely get to walk. I think, in the upcoming days, you can expect the "civil rights establishment" - the same "civil rights establishment" that is working tirelessly to destroy Imus - circle the wagons around Crystal Gail Mangum and protect her at all costs.

Do not get me wrong. Imus fucked up. But then, his show has been BASED on his mouth. If Howard Stern had said what Imus had said, would we be surprised? Hell, no. Stern might have caught the same kind of hell for it, but there would have been no surprise.

I think the only real reason why Sharpton and Jackson (who, by the way, promised that he would pay Magnum's tuition even if she had made up her story) are so upset was because it had been said by a white man. If Dave Chapelle or Chris Rock had said it, nobody would have blinked.

Brin has more Sharpton commentary here.

Kurt Vonnegut has passed.

As far as I know, the only thing I read was an excerpt of his novel "Slapstick!" in an old issue of Playboy. In Art Caldwell's blog entry here, he mentions that the phrase "so it goes" runs throughout Vonnegut's novel "Slaughterhouse Five".

As the Duke and Imus flaps roll on, today's title from Billy Joel seemed appropos.

I need to get soda before the pizza gets here. Let's see...$2.79 for a 2-liter bottle from the pizza place, or $1.29 at the grocery store...

Be seeing you.

I'll take that bet. I doubt anything will come of it. Something did happen there. However, Duke and Durham have an odd relationship, especially when it comes to race and class. Some of the 'old South' is still there. And I am convinced that had these lacrosse players not have the money to access good attorneys they would have been put on trial for sure, and possibly convicted.

Yes, something happened there. A lying skank didn't get tipped enough for her booty-shaking and decided to make a stink about it.
