The Entertainer

Well, the temperature continues to drop. As of this writing it's 82 degrees outside.

Today I intend to try a new area restaurant, and then go watch the Angels play the Indians at the stadium.

I don't get too many chances to watch baseball in the stadium. I'm looking forward to it.

Don't worry - I'll take sunblock.

Yesterday at about 2:30 I got a text message from Brin saying the following: "I predict Pavoratti will be gone before another week passes."

Less than twelve hours later, the great tenor was dead.

Salon magazing has an article calling him "opera's gateway drug". I have no doubt of that. Opera was not my thing at all, but I respected Pavoratti for how he made it acceptable to the masses. He did duets with folks as diverse as Ricky Martin and the Spice Girls. He tried acting. He loved food and drink. He did many performances for charity. At yet he stayed unpretentious, answering those who criticized him for doing "pop" by saying labels meant nothing - "there is good and bad music".

He and his zest for life and music will be missed.

Hillary has promised to "save Social Security". She's not cutting benefits, raising the retirement age, or privitizing. Matter of fact:

"When I'm president, privatization is off the table because it's not the answer to anything."

She said she would protect the program through "fiscal responsibility". I'd like to know how she's going to do that. The system is going to collapse under its own weight, and soon. Yes, something needs to be done.

But to me, "fiscal responsibility" sounds an awful lot like "more taxes".

In other political news, a German politician called the 9/11 attacks "plane accidents".

Riiiiiiiiiiiight.

So. Lunch and then baseball. I'm going to try to go early and get some pictures and autographs.

Worth a try.

Be seeing you.

No, no, it won't be called 'raising taxes,' it will be sold as 'undoing George W. Bush's taxs cuts for the wealthy.'
