Hearts

2009-03-12 - 12:05 p.m.

Shortly after I posted yesterday, I bit the bullet and installed the graphics card and monitor.

Wow. The difference is amazing.

I went from a 32MB card to a 256MB card. The speed increase is obvious, kinda like when I switched to cable internet.

The monitor resolution went from 1028x768 to 1680x1050. Nice and clear.

I'm looking forward to seeing how some of my other programs work on these bad boys.

Speaking of games...

I hate Hearts. The card game, that is.

There's a version on this computer. I think I've won maybe three times. Almost always I'm in last place, and not by a little bit. I played last night and reached 100 first (118, actually). Third place was 62 points. The winner only had 18.

No matter what I pass, 75-85% of the time I'll get the Black Queen. If one of the computer players is losing, he'll "shoot the moon" and be back in the lead.

Even when I play with live people, I get my ass kicked - and I mean soundly.

I may quit the game altogether.

In the "imperfect" $410 billion federal spending package that President Obama just signed (which raises the spending to $1.2 trillion, or about $1B per hour), Massachusetts will be getting about $126 million...and one-fifth of that state money is going to be spent on preserving the Kennedy legacy.

Ordinarily I would suggest private donors. But then, this is Ted Alternative-Energy-Except-Where-It-Spoils-My-View Kennedy.

===

Scenario: someone walks into your house - while you're home, mind you - and just walks into your bathroom.

Do you A) call the police, B) grab a weapon of some kind, C) pound on the door and scream "WTF, dude??", or D) none of the above?

There's a reason why your front door has a lock.

===

Okay. Laundry day.

And I think I'll give my new graphics card a workout.

Be seeing you.

My usual passing strategy in Hearts is to dump high Spades and short any of the other suits. If I have a fair amount of Hearts, I'll gut the middle ranks, keeping my lowest and one high Heart to foil someone shooting the moon.

That's what I try to do too. But no matter what I dump, I get the Bitch about 75% of the time.
