If I recall correctly, in the 70's there was this new term, called "lay-offs". My father was one of the first to be laid off from Xerox. I remember unemployment being very high and people waiting in long lines because of "gas shortages". By the end of the decade, the Ayatollah Kohmeni and his kind were starting to show their faces, dragging down their people and attacking the US with small terrorist plots. All sound familiar? yes. Yes it does.

So a hurricane only counts as major if it hits the U.S.? Both Dean and Felix became Category 5 hurricanes (via AccuWeather.com), and Flossie (Pacific) reached Category 4, though she did not make landfall.
