Big Deal

2007-02-12 - 12:51 p.m.

First off, I didn't watch the Grammys. Last night was a "game night" for me (learned two new ones, by the way). But the big news is the Dixie Chicks winning five trophies.

Well, fine. Good for them.

That still doesn't mean that all the fans that Natalie Maines alienated are going to forgive them.

Yes, she was entitled to say what she wanted. That's one of the wonderful things about this country. But that also means that people are entitled to NOT LIKE IT. People are allowed to decide NOT to buy their music. Radio stations are entitled NOT to play their songs.

The right-to-free-speech does not mean the right-to-not-have-repercussions-to-that-speech. If that were so, there would be no libel suits. No penalty for the classic fire-in-a-crowded-theatre example.

Natalie Maines pissed off a lot of people. If she's entitled to say what she wants, they're entitled to be pissed off.

Now, I think it's a fair statement that Hollywood stars and a lot of the music industry stars are Democrats. So perhaps all this is their way of showing support for the Chicks and disdain for the president.

This has me curious, though. Democrats want to raise taxes on "the rich" and "big business". Wouldn't that include a good number of these stars? It's arguable that some of these stars are corporations themselves.

Democrats also tend to complain about rich people "not paying their fair share". Well, if these stars are taking deductions that, by law, they are entitled to do, how is this different?

Will there be a mass uprising from these folks if the tax laws get changed and they suddenly have to pay more?

Hm.

As Brin mentioned, we saw the updated version of the ST: TOS episode of "The Doomsday Machine" last night. I agree with her - this update helped tremendously.

The machine itself looked more SOLID. And then the Constellation exploded inside it, it looked SO much better than the old one.

There were also lots of little touches. One I thought was cool was an asteroid hitting the saucer section of the Constellation...and shattering.

Kudos to the upgrade guys.

Time to attack the day.

Be seeing you.
